چکیده

We report the discovery, from the H i Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS), of an isolated cloud of neutral hydrogen which we believe to be extragalactic. TheH i mass of the cloud (HIPASS J1712-64) is very low, 1.7×10M⊙, using an estimated distance of ∼ 3.2 Mpc. Most significantly, we have found no optical companion to this object to very faint limits (μ(B) ∼ 27 mag arcsec). HIPASS J1712-64 appears to be a binary system similar to, but much less massive than, HI 1225+01 (the Virgo H i Cloud) and has a size of at least 15 kpc. The 1000 Brightest HIPASS Galaxies: Newly Cataloged Galaxies

The H i Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS) is a blind 21-cm survey for extragalactic neutral hydrogen, covering the whole southern sky. The HIPASS Bright Galaxy Catalog (BGC; Koribalski et al. 2002) is a subset of HIPASS and contains the 1000 H i-brightest (peak flux density) galaxies. Here we present the 138 HIPASS BGC galaxies, which had no redshift measured prior to the Parkes multibeam H i surv...

A Cold Nearby Cloud Inside the Local Bubble

The high-latitude Galactic H I cloud toward the extragalactic radio source 3C 225 is characterized by very narrow 21 cm emission and absorption indicative of a very low H I spin temperature of about 20 K. Through high-resolution optical spectroscopy, we report the detection of strong, very narrow Na I absorption corresponding to this cloud toward a number of nearby stars. Assuming that the turb...

The population of massive X - ray binaries ⋆ I . The Large Magellanic Cloud

We present high resolution blue spectroscopy of an almost complete sample of optical counterparts to massive X-ray binaries in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and derive their spectral classification. We find an spectral type B0II for the optical counterpart to RX J0532.5−6551, confirming it as the first wind-fed massive X-ray binary in the LMC. We also confirm the Be nature of the proposed co...

H I in HO : Hoag ’ s Object revisited

We present new H I observations of Hoag’s Object (HO) obtained with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. The data show that the luminous optical ring around the elliptical body has a bright H I counterpart that shares the kinematical properties of the optical ring. The entire H I structure is twice as large as the optical ring and shows a mild warp in its outer regions relative to the inne...

Hipass Detection of an Intergalactic Gas Cloud in the Ngc 2442 Group

We report the discovery, from the H I Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS), of a gas cloud associated with the asymmetric spiral galaxy NGC 2442. This object, designated HIPASS J0731–69, contains ∼ 10 M⊙ of H I, or nearly one-third as much atomic gas as NGC 2442 itself. No optical counterpart to any part of HIPASS J0731–69 has yet been identified, consistent with the gas being diffuse, and with its s...
